MSI introduces 'high end' U123 Wind netbook for mobile business

MSI the U123 series of netbooks, a 10-inch light and compact platform that has sharper lines and more colors than the company’s “cute” U100 and insides to match.

The U123 uses the latest Atom platform from Intel and basic HDD capacity has been upgraded to 160GB. It also includes 2GB of DRAM, a 10 in. display and Windows, of course.

The U123 has mobile business use in mind, and has been fitted with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and 3.5G mobile network cards (U123H only). There’s a model with an integrated TV tuner (U123T), too.

Oh, and as for those colors: white, gray, midnight blue and red.

Get an MSI Wind Netbook for only

The has been around a long time by Netbook computer standards and generally gets good reviews. Laptop magazine, for example. Back in July, out of 5.

The model CNET reviewed was, at the time, $479. It ran Windows XP, came with an 80GB hard disk and included Bluetooth networking. If you can live without Bluetooth, you can now buy a very similar model, the Wind U100-420US, with a 120GB hard disk for only $349. For that price you get a gigabyte of RAM, an Intel Atom processor, a 10-inch matte finish screen, Windows XP Home Edition, and a reasonable keyboard (all Netbook keyboards involve trade-offs).

This is a great price for a well-received 10-inch Netbook. Less than a month ago. Laptop magazine referred to the price as "amazing" but, as did CNET, about the 3-cell battery. As Netbooks go, a 3-cell battery is bottom-of-the-line and generally doesn't offer much more than 2 hours of run time. That said, the Wind is able to toggle between a high performance mode and a slower mode designed to extend the run time.

In comparing the cheaper U100-420US with the more expensive U100-016US model, Liliputing.com also that the cheaper model doesn't offer gigabyte Ethernet. I think it's a great trade-off.

Both Liliputing and Laptop magazine blogged about the machine being available at Best Buy. However, my local Best Buy didn't have it on display on Sunday, and thecurrently shows the machine as being back-ordered.

The Wind U100-420US is also available, for the same price. It must be new there too as there aren't yet any customer reviews. However, the very similar has 23 reviews.

The is very similar to the Asus Eee PC 1000H. Last month Liliputing ran of the two machines. If you're in the market for a Netbook, it's a worthwhile read.

MSI Wind U100 PLUS netbook with Intel Atom N280 processor makes an official debut

True to the spirit of reusing old product names for new products in the electronics industry, MSI has just introduced the MSI Wind U100 PLUS, which essentially is just a regular netbook with a few added features in the form of an Intel Atom N280 processor and 802.11 n Wi-Fi. This netbook also comes equipped with a 160GB hard drive, built-in Bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel web cam, 4-in-1 card reader, 3 USB ports, VGA-out port, audio-out and mic-in ports and support for up to 2GB of RAM. All units of this model will come pre-installed with Windows XP Home Edition at retail and there will be choices of either 3-cell or 6-cell batteries for these. Available colors are white, black, red, pink and blue, though when exactly and for how much this netbook will sell wasn’t made known by the Taiwanese netbook maker MSI. The program take the form of charity donations in Taiwan, China, Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, Russia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Korea and India to give poor children a chance to learn how to use computers.

MSI Wind U100 Netbook

While the MSI Wind is currently offered in about 5 different color schemes, depending on geographic region, we received a white unit, one of the original colors. The all-white color scheme is a bit tired and played out, perhaps even a little bland. However this isn't quite your ordinary flat white paint. The paint job on the exterior is your typical glossy clear coated white, but opening the U100 reveals a different kind of paint used on the inner surfaces that has a shiny, almost pearl-like quality to it. The quality of the paint is excellent and the entire netbook is very smudge and fingerprint resistant.

The two other original color options are black and pink. A red version is also available, although a bit hard to find, and a special "Love Edition" was also produced that featured multicolored hearts on a white background. However, chances are good you'll only be able to find the Wind in white and black, unless you do some hunting.

The Wind is very much a minimalistic unicolor design. Besides the primary color, in this case white, there are literally no other colors present anywhere on the chassis, excluding labels. While this makes for a uniform appearance, it can also come off a little bland. There aren't even any details or accents. The only splash of color comes from the various status LEDs. The power button features an inset blue LED to indicate power. There is also a huge row of status LEDs along the bottom right edge of the palm rest. There are 8 LEDs in total to indicate everything from hard drive activity and status to battery level and caps lock. These LEDs light up green and may flash orange to indicate certain status conditions.

As previously mentioned, the exterior of the U100 is covered in a uniform glossy white that is very much reminiscent of earlier designs. Except for a single low-key gray 'msi' logo, there are no other blemishes on the lid. The bottom of the Wind, on the other hand, is not Apple-like at all as it is covered by a variety of stickers and pitted with vents and ducts. The Wind's speakers are also located on the bottom of the unit, one at each of the corners under the palm rest.

The overall design of the Wind is fairly typical of currently available netbooks. The Wind is built around the keyboard which plays a large part in determining the size of a netbook's chassis. The chassis of the wind is only as wide as the keyboard and the keys go right up to the edge of the unit on the left and right sides. Despite tightly fitting the width of the chassis to the keyboard and using a very compact keyboard design, the unit still ends up being a bit wider than the 10.2" widescreen panel and as a result we end up with a 3/4" thick screen bezel. The thick bezel is a little on the unsightly side, but its not so thick as to be a major annoyance.

The Wind comes packaged with a MSI branded notebook sleeve. Ours came in white and presumably the other color options would come with matching sleeves. The sleeve itself is definitely on the cheap side. The exterior is made of cheap vinyl with a faux leather pattern. The sleeve closes via a single zipper and the interior is lined with black cloth. There are no pockets for accessories although a mesh divider is present inside. However the divider is rather useless since the sleeve is a perfect fit for the Wind and there isn't much room for anything else beyond a sheet or two of paper. However, for the low price of free, it's hard to grumble too much. The top and bottom of the sleeve are padded and it will provide a certain level of protection for the Wind so at least it's functional.

While we're waiting on the U120 to arrive there are still plenty of U100s to be had. The U100 has a 10" display, plenty of RAM, up to a 160GB hard drive, built in WiFi and a really good price. The MSI Wind U100 comes in plenty of colors and even a Love Edition for those who want their netbook decorated with a bunch of hearts.

Many merchants, including Amazon, are offering the MSI Wind U100 at great prices right now. It's easy to find them in the sub-$350 range.

MSI Wind U100 PLUS netbook launched

MSI today updated its Wind U100 netbook series with the Wind U100 PLUS model. Just like U100, the PLUS model is a 10.1incher typical netbook powered by Intel's Atom . The major difference between them lies in color scheme. Unlike the U100, the U100 PLUS comes in five different sporty colors. You can choose from any of these bright colors -- rose champagne, metallic blue, Imperial Black, Angelic White and Regal Red -- to make your netbook stand apart in crowd.

MSI Wind Netbook Review

The MSI Wind netbook is currently available in four colors and two hardware configurations. The colors are Black, Pink, White and the Love Edition, which is White with heart line graphics. The hardware config choices are just between an 80GB or a 120GB . The 120GB version of this netbook is only available right now in the Black and Love Edition colors. At the time I placed my order last week, I didn’t even know there was an 120GB version. I was having a heck of a time trying to find any online stores that had any models in stock. I lucked out though and found the store and they had some 120GB Black models in stock, so I snapped one up. I originally wanted a 6 cell battery model, but since I couldn’t find any in stock, I decided to go for the higher capacity hard drive model instead. I figure I can always get a 6 cell battery later.

Since I’ve already had the opportunity to try out two other popular netbooks, I was hoping that the MSI would fall somewhere in between the slightly toyish looking ASUS Eee PC and the really cool looking HP Mini-Note. Thankfully, it does. I like the design because it isn’t flashy. It has rounded sides and corners, with no sharp edges. The lid is shiny slick Black that has a tiny bit of sparkle to it. If you look really close, you can see multi-colored specs in the surface. The MSI logo is silk-screened in White in the center… perfect for slapping a sticker over it at some point ;o)

According to the product page on MSI’s site, the lid has “Special Insert Mold Roller Technology (IMR). The special IMR technology protects the notebook from fading and also reducing the fingerprints which makes the Wind always look glare and outstanding.” Ummm… do what? Trust me, the lid still shows fingerprints, smudges and smears.

The bottom half of the Wind is not shiny; it has various heat ventilation slits and five Grey rubber feet. There is also a speaker in the front corners.

On the left side, you’ll find a security lock slot, power connector, heat vents and two USB ports.

The opposite side has another USB port, a 4-in-1 card reader that supports SD, MMC, Memory Stick and MSPro formats, a Video out port and an Ethernet jack.

The lid / screen is held closed with friction. There isn’t a clasp or any other mechanism to keep it closed. The hinge feels sturdy enough that when you open the lid, it will lift the whole computer along with it. So opening it, is a two-handed operation.

This little guy should fit easily on an airplane tray table…

Sizing it up

I purchased the MSI Wind netbook to serve as my travel companion for an upcoming vacation to Florida. I usually take my 15″ MacBook Pro with me whenever a travel, but I get tired of lugging it around the airport with me. I love it dearly, but it’s big and bulky. I decided against a MacBook Air a long time ago because I think they are overpriced and under powered.

The Wind is significantly smaller than the MacBook Pro as you can see here…

It is small and light enough to fit in almost any gear bag.

All by itself, it weights in at 2 lbs 8 oz on my scale. Great right?

Well, when you add the necessary AC adapter, the weight jumps up considerably. Actually, the AC adapter brick isn’t all that cumbersome by itself, but when you pair it with the bulky power cord that plugs into it, that’s when we see the issue. Why is it that the littlest gadgets seem to have the most massive power adapters / cords? Grrrrr. I knew I wouldn’t be happy till I could find something to help me lessen the weight and bulk problem…

It didn’t take me too long to find a cool little solution thanks to the fantastic MSI Wind forums at. This little $3 adapter can be found at and totally replaces the included power cord.

It plugs directly into the AC adapter. Nifty huh? It reduces the overall weight of the netbook and AC adapter from 3 lbs 3 oz to 2 lbs 15 oz. I know that’s only a 4 oz savings, but every little bit helps and it definitely saves some space in your gear bag too.

Using the keyboard and touch pad

Following an initial charge of the battery, I was ready to start putting this little netbook through all the same types of things I use my Macbook Pro for when I travel. I may be The Gadgeteer, but I’m really not an over the top power user when it comes to what I want out of a netbook. Basically, I want to be able to touch type on it, surf all my favorite websites on it, read and respond to emails with it, offload digital camera images to its hard drive and maybe do a bit of photo editing if the mood strikes me. Let’s start with the keyboard…

The size of the Wind’s keyboard is not an issue for me as far as hindering my ability to touch type on it. My hands fit comfortably on the ‘home’ row, without having to adjust the spacing of my fingers. The keys themselves are flat, but have good travel and tactile feedback.

The keyboard would be perfectly fine for me, but due to the layout, I do have consistent problems correctly typing the following characters: . ? /

The location of the . key under the L key is almost directly under it as you can see above. On regular full-size keyboards, the location of the . key is usually where the ? key is. So, when I want to end a sentence with a period, I almost always get a slash. When I want to type a question mark, I end up pressing the Right shift key instead. Same goes for typing a /. I also almost always accidently press the Right up arrow when I mean to press the Right Shift key. So, it ends up that I have to slow my typing down in order to keep from making mistakes. I’ve only had the Wind for a week now, so maybe with more time with it, I’ll automatically start adjusting to the layout. Maybe. I have to say that I really long for the HP Mini-Note keyboard. It was perfect for me.

The built in touch pad on the Wind is small (2 x 1.5 inches) and only has one button that can be pressed on either end, instead of two separate buttons that map to the Left and Right mouse buttons. Unfortunately, MSI stopped using Synaptics touch pads and started using Sentelic finger sensing pads for their Wind netbooks. The touch pad is quite sensitive, so I have had no problems using it like a mouse. Even the one button doesn’t bother me. I do miss not having the ability to do two finger scrolling like I can on my Macbook Pro though. The Sentelic driver does have a corner tapping scroll feature, but it doesn’t work very well at all. I ended up just disabling it. I’ll probably end up using a small Bluetooth mouse…

The power button is located in the upper Right corner of the keyboard. It has a Blue star LED built into. It’s small, but easy to press.

A row of status LEDs is located along the bottom Right edge of the keyboard. These LEDs show the battery charging status, Bluetooth and Wifi status, and hard drive activity.

The display

A 10 inch display was an important selling point for me as I didn’t like the Eee PC’s tiny 7″ screen at all. The HP’s display was the bigger at 8.9 inch and with a resolution of 1280 x 786, it was significantly better. The Wind’s display maximum resolution is 1024 x 600 and features an LED backlight that gives it really good color and brightness. Even with the brightness set back to 50%, the display is easy to read.

Here we have the Wind next to my Macbook Pro. Both machines are set to maximum brightness and are pointed at http://the-gadgeteer.com. Although I wish the maximum resolution was higher, I have had no problems using the Wind to surf all my favorite sites. Up and down scrolling isn’t that bad, and horizontal scrolling isn’t necessary thank goodness.

I haven’t tested the display outside in direct sunlight - I never use my laptops outside anyway… Today is gloomy, so I can’t do a valid test. Hopefully someone else will chime in and comment about that aspect of the display. So far, I can’t find any real faults with the screen. The colors are vibrant, text is crisp and the size is just fine.

MSI Wind U115 details turn up

Netbooks are hot this year and will continue to be one of the most popular categories in the computer market going into 2009. MSI has one of the best netbooks around with its Wind U110 and it has now released some specs on the follow up U115 netbook.

The U115 features the same 10-inch screen and what appears to be the same keyboard as the U110. The difference comes in with the hybrid design of the U115 and some of the other specs. The U115 has a SSD for the OS that features 16GB of storage.

MSI Wind U123 Now Available In US

MSI Wind U123 which has been a while ago is now available on Amazon.com for $349.99 with a 6 cell battery.

Available in blue and red, the MSI Wind U123 will comes with a 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 resolution screen, a 1.66GHz intel Atom N280 Processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 160GB hard drive. It also features facial recognition software that lets you login to Windows by gazing at the webcam.

MSI's Wind U123 netbook gets unboxed

We already caught MSI's upgraded (which goes by , if you must know) last month, but the crazy cats over at PortableMonkey have gone and got a model fresh in the box. Needless to say, this retail edition (which is hitting Japanese shelves any moment now) didn't stay packaged up for long, but we are happy to say that we've been cordially invited to feast our eyes upon the unboxing process. Right out of the gate, we have to share the disappointment in the lack of a rear panel for easily accessing the internal RAM and HDD, but at least the Atom is a (minor) step above what we've grown accustomed to. MSI's CULV-packin' X-Slim X340 ships this month in US

MSI already told us that its ultraslim, super-sexy, WiMAX-ready X-Slim X340 would be starting at , and now we're being told that the planet's first laptop to be based on Intel's (consumer ultra low voltage) platform will be shipping in April. As in, this month. For the forgetful souls in the crowd, this here ultraportable will ship with an CULV processor that consumes just 5.5 watts of power and a 4-cell battery. Now, to find a retailer 'round these parts willing to let you pre-order one...

MSI Wind U115 for sale in Japan, UK

MSI's, the huggable, lovable, notable, and ultraportable hybrid SSD/HDD is now available to faithful readers in the UK and Japan. It's been spotted making the rounds on the Interwebz in the £450 - £500 (approx. $675-$750) range. A bit pricey for a 10-inch netbook, sure, but perhaps the Atom Z530 processor, 6-cell battery, and 720p video playback will make it worth your while. You have been making some irrational decisions lately -- but we'll talk about that later. Hands on video after the break.

MSI's X-Slim X340 now shipping in US for $899.99

It's hard to say if our influenced the MSRP here, but either way, we'll take it. MSI has finally (finally!) come clean with a set price on its succulent, and while we awhile back that it would ship here for under a grand, we definitely had our doubts. Starting today, eager consumers can order one for the low, low price of $899.99, which buys you an Intel ULV SU3500 processor, Vista Home Premium, a 13.4-inch 1,366 x 768 resolution display, GMA 4500MHD graphics and 2GB of DDR2 RAM. There's also a 320GB hard drive, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, 4-cell battery (an 8-cell is optional), 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, twin USB 2.0 sockets, VGA / HDMI outputs and an SD / MMC card reader. The 0.78-inches thick machine is shipping today in the US of A from a bevy of e-tailers, and you can peek the full release just after the break.

MSI Wind U100 Plus with Intel Atom N280 CPU

MSI has announced the Wind U100 Plus 10-inch netbook, which is an updated version of the previously released U100. Available in Imperial Black, Angelic White, Regal Red, Rose Champagne and Metallic Blue, the new model supports an Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz processor, up to 2GB of DDR2 memory, a 160GB hard drive with Windows XP Home preloaded, the GMA 950 integrated graphics, and a 3- or 6-cell battery. Its 10-inch LED backlight display comes with a resolution of 1024×600 pixels. Other features include a 1.3MP webcam, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, an Ethernet LAN port, three USB ports, a 4-in-1 media card reader, and a VGA output.

MSI X-Slim Notebook Released in Japan

The MSI X-Slim will be launched in Japan in May 2009. This MacBook Air competitor was announced at 2009 CEBIT in Hannover. Measuring at only 19.8mm thick, the X-Slim features a Core 2 Solo SU3500 CPU running at 1.4GHz with a 2GB of RAM, and a choice of a 320GB HDD or a 250GB HDD. This super-slim laptop also has HDMI out, Bluetooth and optional 3G plus Wimax module. The MSI X-Slim is priced at 100,000 Yen ($1,029).

MSI anuncia oficialmente portateis de 8.9 e 10.2-polegadas

A MSI já anunciou oficialmente a sua guerra com o concorrente Asus EeePC, integrando no mercado o seu rival MSI Wind.

De acordo com a press release, o portátil de 1kg Wind ficará disponível em ecrãs de 8.9-polegadas e 10.2-polegadas, capaz de ler resoluções de 1024 x 600 pixeis.

Esta resolução será suficiente para visionar páginas web em tamanho total, ou pelo menos de forma mais interessante que no Asus Eee PC 701.

Embora a MSI pretenda concorrente ferozmente, irá integrar nas suas máquinas, discos rígidos de 2.5-polegadas 80GB, ao invés de drives Flash.

Outras especificações incluem Bluetooth 2.0 e uma câmera de 1.3Megapixeis, não havendo mais informação acerca das especificações.
A press release indica ainda que o Wind PC estará disponível em branco e cor-de-rosa, juntamente com as versões em azul e cinza, que foram apresentadas na CeBIT.

O modelo mais barato será vendido a €299, e integra um sistema operativo Linux OS. O preço poderá disparar no entanto, para os €699, numa versão mais completa e com Windows XP.
